In the state of Washington, an armed security guard needs to be licensed. The licensing process is governed by the Washington State Department of Licensing. In order to be approved for a license there are certain criteria that must be met first.

Basic Requirements for armed security guards in Washington:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • No felony convictions in the past 10 years
  • May be asked to submit to drug testing (which may be ongoing
  • Submit fingerprint card
  • Must have good moral character
  • Have not committed any acts of fraud

Registration is required for armed security guards in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice makes the regulations regarding licensing. There are certain criteria that must be met before a license will be approved. All paperwork and application is submitted by the hiring company.

As an armed security guard In Vermont, a license is required. The department that regulates this type of license is The Board of Private Investigative and Security Services. The hiring security agency is responsible for submitting the application. There are certain criteria that must be met before a license will be approved.

Armed Security Guard Training in Utah

As an armed security guard in Utah, a license is required. The Utah Division of Occupational and Prof Licensing (DOPL) handles the licensing of security guards. In addition to meeting the basic requirements of a security guard, additional firearms training must be completed.

Basic requirements for armed security guards in Utah:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Valid Social Security number
  • Valid Identification (Utah driver’s license, passport
  • Finger print cards (2) or electronic fingerprinting is accepted

Armed Security Guard Training in Texas

Armed security guards in Texas must be registered and employed with a security agency. You must obtain a weapons permit in addition to your registration card. After all requirements are met, the Texas Department of Public Safety will administer all licenses and permits.

Basic requirements for Armed Security guards in Texas:

  • You must be at least 21 years old (18 years old if you have an honorable military discharge)
  • United States citizen or legal alien

In the state of Tennessee, a license is required for an armed security guard. It’s also a requirement that armed security guards be hired by a security company before a license is granted. License must be renewed every two years if you are still employed as an armed guard. Be prepared to answer personal information about any military discharge and criminal history.

Armed Security Guard Training in South Dakota

In the state of South Dakota, there aren’t any regulations regarding security guards. However, there are requirements for carrying firearms. State officials are extremely careful about the information that they can tell you on such requirements, if any. The Attorney General’s office does recommend that the hiring company seek the advice of an attorney to get complete requirements. The county level may also have their own requirements and the County Clerk’s office would be the best point of contact for those requirements.  However, if you are applying to become an armed security in South Dakota then meeting these basic requirements may help you land the job.

  • High School diploma or equivalent

In South Carolina, an armed security guard must apply for a license through the security company that he or see work for. In Rhode Island, a license is required for armed security guards in addition to a weapon permit. Licensing is administered by the Attorney General’s office for the security company not specifically for an individual. Armed Security Guard Training in Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, getting an armed security guard’s license means filing a petition with the County Clerk’s office. It is up to the judge as to who is approved for a security guard license. The process is rather detailed.  The County Clerk’s office is limited to the questions they can answer about this process and recommends that an attorney be retained for such matters.

Basic requirements to submit petition for armed security guards in Pennsylvania:

Must file a petition with the following attachments:
  1. Passport photos (2)
  2. Letters from character witnesses pointing out your good moral character
  3. Certified proof of criminal background check
  4. Fingerprint card with fee (this card must be submitted to the County Clerk’s office with a money order that will be mailed to the Pennsylvania State police)

You must be licensed as an armed security in Oklahoma. This license is administered by CLEET and is renewed every two years. Before becoming an armed guard, you must first meet certain criteria including a psych evaluation.

Requirements for armed security guards in Oklahoma:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States
  • Must be mentally competent as determined by a psychological evaluation

In the state of Ohio, armed security guards are required to be licensed guard and an employee of a licensed security company. It is the responsibility of the licensed company to ensure that all employees are registered within seven business days of hire. A firearms permit is required and certain training requirements.

Basic requirements for armed security guard in Ohio:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • United States citizen or resident alien
  • May require proof of high school diploma or equivalent
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanors associated with violence (which includes domestic), drugs ( use or sale), theft or fraud

Applicant must notify the superintendent of the arm security guard’s duties and firearm requirements. In addition, each armed security guard must successfully complete a basic firearms training course approved by the Ohio training commission. Such training must be at least 24 hours of handgun training and shall include five additional hours for any additional firearms. Yearly qualifying is also required. After all requirements are met, a certificate will be issued and a permit to carry a firearm is granted. Once granted, all armed security guards in Ohio must carry firearm identification card when on duty.

In North Dakota, armed security guards, also known as commissioned security guards, are required to register with the security board even as an employee of licensed security company. In addition, to carry a firearm a security guard must pass a security provider’s exam and meet basic requirements.

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • United States citizen or resident alien
  • Proof of high school diploma or equivalent

Exam

Special Note about a Concealed Weapon Permit:

If you have a concealed weapon permit for North Dakota, you are not allowed to carry your firearm while on duty. You must successfully meet the above requirements and state weapons requirement before receiving certification to be an armed security guard.

Armed Security Guard Training in North Carolina

In North Carolina, registration is required for all armed security guards.  An armed security guard can only carry a firearm once granted a firearms permit by the Board.

Basic requirements for an armed security guard in North Carolina:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • United States citizen or resident alien
  • No felony convictions or misdemeanors associated with violence (which includes domestic), drugs ( use or sale), theft or fraud in the last 5 years
  • Good moral character

Firearm Registration

An armed security guard in North Carolina received a pocket card issued by the Board, which identifies the armed guard and the security company that he or she works for. This registration card is good for one year and must be renewed annually as long as you are still employed.

How to Become an Armed Security Guard in New York

To apply for a Special Armed Guard Security Card in the State of New York (which enables you to carry a firearm while on duty as a security guard), you must complete all of the following before you can apply:
  • Possess a valid New York State pistol license.
  • Take an 8-hour “pre-assignment” training course. If you already possess your Security Guard Registration Card (unarmed), then you have already met this particular requirement.
  • Complete an additional 47 hours firearms training course.
Again, all of the above must be completed before applying.
Additionally, every year after you are given a valid Armed Security Guard Card, you will need to complete 8 hours of additional “maintenance” training to keep your registration valid.

The Application Process

The New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services is where you will actually apply for your Armed Security Guard Card after you’ve met all of the requirements.
Along with your application, you will need to submit your fingerprint for your background check. This is done through something called L-1 Enrollment Services, which help you electronically scan your fingerprint, and they’ll give you receipts for proof that you include in your application.
Then, you can use the Employee Statement and Security Guard Employer Application to apply. Be sure to check the “armed security guard” box when you are applying

In the state of Indiana, it is up to the hiring company whether a license is required for a security guard. The licensing process is governed by the Statues & Rules IC 25-30-1-11 Employees of licensee; a security guard can be hired under the licensee, which is the hiring company. The hiring company is responsible for that security guard and must supply a photo ID and fingerprints of each security guard that isn’t licensed, if requested. Now here is where matters get gray. The statues do not address armed security guards for Indiana; therefore, it is left up to the county. However, on the Indiana State website there are requirements expected for those who want to license a firearm.

Unlike the Class D license for unarmed security guards, in Florida requirement is that armed security guards have a Class G security guard license. An armed security guard must be licensed in Delaware. A commissioned or arm security guard must meet the basic requirements of a security guard that is not armed with a few extra requirements. Once all requirements are met, the license is administered by the Delaware Department of Public Safety. The license is good for two years and must be valid while employed. To keep license current, yearly courses must be completed.

In the State of Colorado, an armed security guard must apply for a license as a security guard. However, there are no specific requirements for carrying a firearm. According to the Denver Excise and Licensing department any firearms requirements were removed as of 2007. In addition, there is no statewide regulation, which means all regulations are handled at the county level, and that means the requirements may vary from one county to the next.

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Colorado resident
  • United States citizen or legal resident alien
  • Must have a valid Colorado driver’s license or state ID card
  • A valid social security card
  • Must provide a medical certificate (within 60 days of filing the security guard application) stating you are physically capable of performing the duties of a security guard.   • Proof of background check, within 30 days after filing the security guard application, from the CBI or other recognized source
  • If expected to carry a nightstick, mace or knife applicant must show proof of compliance of Regulation No. 7 ; there are specific rules as to the length of blade and nightstick. In addition, the use of mace is allowed based on these specific regulations.
