Armed Security Guard Training in West Virginia

In West Virginia, an armed security guard either works as an individual or is hired by a security company, either way you must obtain a license.  Licensing is regulated by The West Virginia Secretary of State’s office. Before a license is issued, there are certain criteria that must be met.

Basic requirements for armed security guards in West Virginia:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • United States citizen or legal alien
  • Have good moral character
  • Never been denied a license or had one revoked in West Virginia
  • Mentally competent
  • Drug or alcohol use or dependence is prohibited
  • Pass drug test
  • No felony convictions
  • No history of assisting an inmate escape
  • No history of buying or selling stolen property
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check

Proven Experience

As a sole proprietor, you must be able to prove years of experience as a security guard in West Virginia. Certain training and experience may be required by the company that hires you. The training topics below offers an idea of what type of training you can expect:

Armed Security Guard Training in Washington

In the state of Washington, an armed security guard needs to be licensed. The licensing process is governed by the Washington State Department of Licensing. In order to be approved for a license there are certain criteria that must be met first.

Basic Requirements for armed security guards in Washington:

  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • No felony convictions in the past 10 years
  • May be asked to submit to drug testing (which may be ongoing
  • Submit fingerprint card
  • Must have good moral character
  • Have not committed any acts of fraud
  • Hired or have an offer of hire from a licensed company
  • Must be licensed as an unarmed security guard
  • State issued driver’s License
  • Good physical conditioning

Training Curriculum:

The pre-assignment training required topics must include the following:
  • Role of Private Security
  • Legal Aspects
  • Patrol and Observation
  • Incident Response
  • Security Resources: Surveillance operation and documentation
  • Customer Service Issues: Working with and addressing the public
  • First Aid Overview
  • Report Writing
Note: You must be licensed as an unarmed security guard, in which case you have already met the above training requirements. Additionally, you must have a commission issued firearms certificate that is current.

Additional training:

Must complete four-hours of refresher training every year (Please see training requirements)
  • Customer service training (1 hour)
  • Emergency response and post related training (3 hours)

Armed Security Guard Training in Virginia

Registration is required for armed security guards in Virginia. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice makes the regulations regarding licensing. There are certain criteria that must be met before a license will be approved. All paperwork and application is submitted by the hiring company.

Basic requirements for armed security guards in Virginia:

  • Be at least 18 years old (usually 21 in other states)
  • Finger print cards
  • Mentally competent
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must successfully pass a drug test
  • No felony convictions
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Submit to criminal background check
  • Successfully complete 18 hours of required training
  • Firearms Endorsement

Training Curriculum:

A basic training must be conducted by a board-approved instructor. Topics may include but is not limited to the following:
  1. Orientation – 2 hours
    • Laws and Regulations
    • Code of Ethics
    • Role and Responsibilities
  2. Law – 4 hours
  3. Security Patrol, Access Control, and Communications – 2 hours
  4. Writing reports – 4 hours
  5. Emergency Procedures – 4 hours
  6. Confrontation Management – 2 hours

Armed Security Guard Training in Vermont

As an armed security guard In Vermont, a license is required. The department that regulates this type of license is The Board of Private Investigative and Security Services. The hiring security agency is responsible for submitting the application. There are certain criteria that must be met before a license will be approved.

Basic requirements for armed security guards in Vermont:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Social Security card
  • Proper Identification (Vermont driver’s license, state id or passport)
  • Two (2)  sets of finger print cards
  • Passport size photo
  • Certificate of completion of 40-hours of classroom training
  • Mentally competent
  • Provide character references
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must successfully pass a drug test
  • No felony convictions
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Submit to criminal background check

Training Curriculum:

A basic training must be conducted by a board-approved instructor with at least two years experience in the subject matter. Topics may include but is not limited to the following:

(3) Patrol and Observation
(4) Incident Response

Firearms Training

In addition to the 40 hour classroom training, firearms training must be successfully completed at least two years before application submission for all armed security guards in Vermont.
  • Basic firearm safety and  (12 hours)
  • Legal responsibility (included in the 12 hours)
  • Use and safety of your particular handgun (4 hours)

Armed Security Guard Training in Utah

As an armed security guard in Utah, a license is required. The Utah Division of Occupational and Prof Licensing (DOPL) handles the licensing of security guards. In addition to meeting the basic requirements of a security guard, additional firearms training must be completed.

Basic requirements for armed security guards in Utah:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Valid Social Security number
  • Valid Identification (Utah driver’s license, passport
  • Finger print cards (2) or electronic fingerprinting is accepted
  • Mentally competent
  • Have good moral character
  • No drug or alcohol use or dependence
  • Must successfully pass a drug test
  • Never convicted of a felony
  • No disabilities that would prevent performance of duty
  • Submit to criminal background check
  • Expected to know all the Laws and Rules pertaining to your service

Classroom Training

All applicants must complete 24 hours of basic training and pass a written test with a score of at least 80%.
Courses Study should include:
  • Legal responsibilities
  • Writing reports
  • Use of proper force
  • Sexual harassment
  • Responding to a situation
  • Patrolling techniques
  • Community relations

Firearms Training and Completion:

You must sit and complete 24 hours of classroom training on your particular firearm in accordance with the rules of the licensing act. In addition, to these 24 hours, you must submit a Certification of Completion form showing that you have completed six hours of firearm instruction and an additional six hours at the range.

Armed Security Guard Training in Texas

Armed security guards in Texas must be registered and employed with a security agency. You must obtain a weapons permit in addition to your registration card. After all requirements are met, the Texas Department of Public Safety will administer all licenses and permits.

Basic requirements for Armed Security guards in Texas:

  • You must be at least 21 years old (18 years old if you have an honorable military discharge)
  • United States citizen or legal alien
  • Valid social security number
  • No felony convictions or any crime involving the illegal use of weapons
  • Mental competency
  • Drug Testing
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check
  • Fingerprint cards (2)
  • Passport photo
  • Texas driver’s license
  • Level II certificate of completion
  • Successfully complete Level III classroom training & firearms training

Training

Commission officers must have completed level II Basic security guard training. This training may be given by hiring company as long as the curriculum is in accordance guidelines set for by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Firearms Training

Armed security officers in Texas are called commissioned officers and they must complete and pass a level 3 training program, which consists of 30 hours, given by a level III certified instructor. Form PSB38-A must be submitted with application. Search here for a training course near you.
